In London, the most common reasons people seek loft conversions are a growing family or wanting a guest room. However, if you don’t need extra bedrooms or bathrooms, a loft conversion can have many other purposes and benefits. Here are some other reasons a loft conversion is worth considering:
Whether you live in the property or you’re an established landlord, a loft conversion gives you the opportunity to significantly increase your income. If you add a loft conversion onto a large enough house, you could convert it into three self contained flats, each with its own kitchen or kitchenette, bedroom(s) and bathroom. Alternatively, you can add a loft and just turn the ground floor into a flat, allowing you to live on the first and second floor, or rent it out as a larger family home.
House sharing is very common in London, and rooms to let are always in high demand. Adding extra space to your home with a loft conversion could give you the opportunity to boost your income whilst adding value to your property. Your tenant could either live up in the loft with their own bedroom and bathroom, allowing you to command a good market price, or you could move up there yourself, giving your tenant use of the lower floors while you enjoy the light and tranquillity of your loft conversion. Alternatively, you could use the extra space as an Airbnb, allowing you to earn extra cash as and when you want it, without the long-term commitment of sharing your home on a permanent basis.
You could work at the kitchen table, but isn’t that uncomfortably close to the fridge? Is sitting on the sofa near the TV bad for your productivity? A loft conversion could give you a purpose-built home office, mercifully free of distractions with the fridge and TV two flights of stairs away. As you probably won’t need a massive space for your home office, you could even utilise a small alcove within your loft conversion and still add an extra bedroom and ensuite bathroom.
Maybe you’re the only one who loves video games? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to play pool at home but don’t have the space for it? A loft conversion could be the perfect solution for an entertainment area, big or small. Think a flat screen with surround sound and a big comfy chair for the ultimate gaming experience, or a bar, pool table and beanbags for the perfect place for you and your friends to unwind. Let your imagination run wild!
Is your passion music or art? Whether you do it for a living or it’s just a hobby, a loft conversion could give you a dedicated space to express yourself. With skylights and Velux windows letting in plenty of natural light, a loft can be the ideal place to paint or draw. If music’s more your thing, a loft can provide the perfect space to play without distractions for you and others; just ensure there’s plenty of soundproofing. If you live in a detached house, you’ll only need it in the flooring as you won’t have any neighbours to disturb. Your loft could be your dream practise space, or, if you’re serious about your creative output, you could even make it into a home recording studio.
Dreaming of a huge open plan kitchen but don’t have the space? This is even more likely if you don’t have a garden to build an extension into. This was the case for one NappyValleyNetter who owns the first floor flat in a maisonette. As they also owned the roof space, they decided to build up to create a stunning kitchen in their loft. This huge space also includes a dining area and a sofa to relax on, and they’re so happy with it that they now spend most of their time up there instead of in their actual living room.
