Wallington County Grammar School

Postby Annabel (admin) » Thu Nov 13, 2008 9:10 pm

Savvy SW parents have wised up to the fact that if you can’t commit to independent school fees, state grammars like Wallington and the rest of the Surrey schools are the next best thing. Consequently, as with the other Sutton grammar schools, it’s always oversubscribed, and competition for entry for the 120 places is fierce – reports of police being called in to help with crowd control at the recent entrance exam are not exaggerated. Like its near neighbour Wilson’s, Wallington is located in Sutton, a 20 minute train ride from Nappy Valley. The school has a traditional feel, with the headmaster – who describes it as ‘Hogwarts’ - usually in a gown. Good facilities, lovely grounds and friendly atmosphere. Particularly strong on art and sport – but NB, it’s a rugby school (no football). Entrance is by exam only (English, maths, verbal reasoning) and no interview, so if your child isn’t at prep school, we recommend coaching from 9plus (although the school discourages this). 890 pupils. 11-18 – takes girls in the sixth form.
