Maths Tutor for dyslexic/ ADHD Child

Postby TryingMyBest » Tue Oct 22, 2024 2:04 pm

I have a bright and articulate 10 year-old who does not seem to be understanding the maths taught at school at all. She is in year six and has been struggling since forever really. The school identified her issues and have put her in extra support classes etc. but nothing seems to be helping. She recently achieved 19/109 across 3 maths papers at school. She is very keen to get some help so she is driven and wants to be able to understand.

She has finally been put forward for dyslexia screening which we've been talking about since year 4, her Dad is dyslexic. She has also been referred for an ADHD assessment as she show multiple symptoms of the latter also which compounds her challenges.

I am looking for a patient, experienced tutor used to working with neurodivergent children to come to our home for two sessions a week, on a Monday and Wednesday to help her. The way they are teaching her at school is not working, she seems to have no memory but weirdly is really good at pattern recognition, but needs some new way that suits her brain to understand!

Does anyone have any recommendations or the right experience?

Thanks in advance,

Emma

Hi Emma,

We have just posted about 11+ support! We are team of local specialist tutors and one of us can definitely help. It sounds like your child would benefit from revisiting the fundamentals and clearing some early road blocks.

It would be great to hear more about them. We can be reached on 07956 108888 or hello@thehappyscholar.co.uk

Hi Emma,

You may find it useful to contact SENsational Teachers. Specialised and highly experienced teachers will come to your home for a premium fee.

One-to-one tuition is intensive and highly impactful, so you may find one session a week is ample, especially at the beginning.

All the best!

My daughter is Dyslexic and had significant struggles with Maths all through prep and secondary school.  We found a brilliant tutor for her.  She is however online only.  Our daughter really excelled through her tuition and passed her Maths GCSE above and beyond what she was anticipating.  If you would like her details please pm me.

Hi there,

I am a private tutor and have been working with clients across South-West London for the past 10 years. My expertise is languages however I also specialise in 7/8+ as well as 11+ entrance exams and common entrance.

I have extensive experience working with children with learning difficulties, including dyslexia and ADHD, and so would tailor my lessons with your daughter accordingly.

I would be happy to have a trial lesson with your daughter to see if we fit and perhaps look at weekly lessons after. I'd be delighted to help her with the mathematical language as well as look to teaching key concepts to her in different ways from school which are clearer and make more sense to her.

Where are you based please? Would a trial lesson perhaps after half-term suit?

Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

Have you considered whether your child has Dyscalculia?  My daughter has dyscalculia as part of her ADHD and she has had a one-to-one dyscalculia tutor since year 3.

She loves Maths now (ironically), though still behind her year group.  She is taught by Louise Ward who lives locally: 07813 140059

She's brilliant and really cares.

Good Luck.

Hi Emma,

I'm a qualified and experienced SEN Maths tutor with both dyslexia and dyscalculia post grad qualifications. I live off Northcote Rd, and would happily meet to chat to you about your daughter''s maths difficulties.

My teaching is multi-sensory and tailored to a pupil's learning style. Many of my peoples have dyslexia or ADHD so I am familiar with teaching children with learning differences.

Do call me for a chat on (07813) 140059.

Louise

Hi, I cannot recommend a tutor, as we now live in Devon, but just to say that my son has dyslexia and dyscalculia and maths is his hardest subject. I realise I now had it too, had to learn maths by wrote. Your daughter will likely need a multi-sensory approach. Like my son, you say she is good at patterns, so she may be brilliant in some areas. It’s hard when so much emphasis is put on maths. We bought lots of physical aids, counters, abacus etc and that really helped. Good luck.
