Moving to a private school in Y5

Postby manta » Tue Feb 18, 2025 8:02 am

Hi,

Has anyone moved their child to a private school in Y5, predominantly to help with secondary prep? I'd love to know how it went for you. And relatedly, do you know of local (balham/clapham) schools with spaces in y5? Thanks

Is your child in Y5 now?  If so I'd say you are too late to benefit from a move
Going into Y5 in Sept - worth a shot - then they get a whole year of prep for the entrance exams

Look at small schools, like Eveline Day School or Dolphin, classes are smaller and they can focus on the kids need. If you want to dedicate to secondary school prep they can definitely accommodate.

Yes! We did and it was the best decision we ever made!
We moved our daughter in the last half term of year 4 so she could settle in before year 5
She has absolutely thrived and is happier, more confident and I’m more relaxed knowing she’s in the best place!
She moved from a local state school to Dolphin school on northcote road
Happy to answer any questions!

From a school perspective, this is a move that can easily be supported, especially in a smaller school as a previous poster mentioned.

Speak to the admissions staff to find out about the availability of spaces. Moving after Easter, allowing time to settle in during the summer of Year 4 and make new friends, get used to new routines, will also help get the most out of the start of Year 5.

Prep for senior schools will have started so be prepared to discuss what you are looking for and where you have been to visit already.

Have copies of the most recent school reports and any standardised assessment available to send via email to the schools you are keen on.

Always go and visit in person to get a feel as to whether it is right for your child and your family.

We moved our daughter in Year 5 from state primary. It had been a lovely school that fell apart during COVID and she wasn't very happy socially and had fallen behind academically. She moved to a private prep school for her last 2 years of primary and it was the best decision we ever made. She loved it and became the happiest child I have know- the transition took just a few weeks. She became so confident and they managed to catch her up academically so that she was able to get into the first choice secondary school.
