Broomwood vs Thomass Fulham

Postby NRmumma » Sun Jan 19, 2025 8:40 pm

We have a place at both for our son for reception and can’t tell which would be a better choice. We live not close but walking distance to Broomwood (although may realistically drive at least some of the time) whereas Thomas’s Fulham will be an approx 10-15 min drive depending on traffic.

Any thoughts on/ experiences / input on Broomwood vs Thomas’s Fulham would be much appreciated!

Is there no way of trying to transfer the place to Thomas’s Clapham if you live south of the river?

The Thomas’s schools are easily better than the Dukes/Broomwood ones but the drive over the bridge will be a killer!

That is defintely something worth considering, thanks @Btc_mummy … can I ask why you say Thomas’s are easily better though? From what perspective? Thank you!

Broomwood has been great for us and I have loved living in walking distance of the school - no headache with the traffic and it’s made it easy for my kids to see their friends as it’s all very local. Great Head’s and teachers - they really prepare children for the senior school years, and my boys have been really happy. It‘s academically strong but caters for children of different abilities and nurtures their passions - sport, music, drama. We have always found the teachers and other staff approachable and caring.

Perhaps BTC mummy has experiences of both but as a Broomwood parent who is very happy I wouldn’t be so black and white esp as I have heard Thomas’s has gone a bit down hill from some parents.

We love Broomwood - it is a lovely warm school and my children have thrived. One got scholarships to top schools and the other who struggles more academically has been so well nurtured and catered for.

Love how it’s starts co Ed and then goes to single sex - naturally I like co Ed but 8-13 quite beneficial to be single sex as needs of the different sexes seem to be amplified!

Broomwood boys also has a new head who is fantastic.

I would go by what you feel and what is easiest location wise if you can’t otherwise decide.

If you lived near Broomwood, Thomas’s Clapham would be your best one surely!
There is really no point to get into the debate of which school is “better” - because it is in the eyes of the beholder!
We love Thomas’s because children get to be themselves yet they are all very well mannered. No matter how shy or introverted your child is, there is something for him and by the time he finishes school, he would have become a confident and independent young person ready to take on senior school and life.
I would not agree that Thomas’s has “gone down hill” - if anything, the school is now better recognised academically than ever before and when you walk in, everyone’s busy but happy - what more can one ask for?
Size matters - you and your boy will not be restricted to the same friendship group for 7 years + as the school is big enough for him to be friends with lots of different people, thus reduce dependency on “besties”.
Whilst it might be true that boys and girls learn differently, it is also important to acknowledge that naturing tolerance of the opposite sex starts as a child. It is so important, in my view, that boys and girls co exist and are given the tools to regulate themselves - because that is the real world!
One thing worth pointing out is that Thomas’s also has SEN provisions but it doesn’t market itself by it. We have seen plenty of examples where the school goes out of their way to create the most nurturing environment for children of all abilities.
I would go with your gut feeling, talk to your current childcare provider to get a sense of what your sons like in a school environment, how he likes to learn and whether he plays with both girls and boys - these will all help you form the best opinion but of course, bear in mind that children change all the time! Whatever you decide, both schools will be a very good start for them.
Good luck!

Thomas’s, indeed, has “gone down hill” overall. Althought, some schools are still holding up...
I would caution anyone commiting to it, as this is a for-profit school with somewhat questionable financial situation.

Suspmum clearly has a problem with Thomas’s from her comments on other posts, but she might have a reason for it, who knows.

Regarding the OP, I would consider Broomwood if you’re closer to it, and only Thomas’s Clapham / Battersea if you can transfer to either. As a Thomas’s parent myself distance to school is what is helping our kids (3) make the most of clubs, local friendships, not having excessively long commutes etc. Their day begins at 8 and with clubs it can end at 5, so being closer can make a huge difference

By the way , Thomas’s is not going downhill, you can ask the school for the latest results in secondary school offers (shared internally to parents last Friday). They’be been fantastic .

So, you are saying that many selected other schools rather than continue in Thomas's senior school...okey then... ;)

Trouble is, parents come to Thomas’s for the WRONG reasons!!!
The school openly say they do not prep children for 7+ therefore the early years is relatively relaxed and focusing on happiness and childhood wellbeing. Not sure what you mean by questionable finances, it’s like saying about a neighbour, oh so they didn’t go on a luxury holiday this year, their finances must be questionable!
To give a more balanced view, Thomas’s is not for every child. If your child is independent, willing to give everything a try type, then the school is the perfect fit. If your child needs attention lot of attention and you think paying private school means teachers should service you, then please think twice - it is a big school, it won’t please everyone. Find the best fit for your child more than the brand!
