Is plastic grass still a thing?

Postby PlasticGrass » Thu Mar 20, 2025 12:14 pm

We're looking at a garden renovation and I wondered if plastic grass is still a thing?

When we last did one it was all the rage but wondering if the tide has turned a little?

I'd like to hope that the tide has turned as more people realise how bad it is for the environment.
The production process is polluting, it releases microplastics into the soil, it kills wildlife and it prevents drainage thus contributing to risks of flooding.

You have to keep it clean and it overheats in Summer, posing risks of burns (as well as friction burns if you fall onto it), so it's not a good idea if you have children.

Some people will say that a lawn gets muddy and may look patchy, but if you have money to spend consider rather investing in draining layers to prevent a real lawn from getting waterlogged. Re the patchy look, I personally prefer that to the unrealistic uniformity of fake grass, but that's my own preference - the rest is objective! Please think carefully before going ahead with it.

I think the fact that you ask the question means you know the answer..
It's not. If you want a patch then have a real one, otherwise if you don t mind having grass for the sake of grass, then consider other landscape designs. Look at the works of Charlotte Row or Polyanna Wilkinson. They often have gravel, stones and greens and it looks fantastic.

Fake grass is brilliant , well recommend it. Get some from easigrass. It’s doesn’t burn you in summer , that is complete nonsense and if properly installed drainage is fine

I suspect it’s less talked about these days as it’s already been installed in so many places, and once done lasts “forever”…. sort of like loft extensions are no longer all the rage.

If you want a patch, have a real one; otherwise, if you don't mind having grass for the sake of grass, consider other landscape designs, such as those of Charlotte Row or Polyanna Wilkinson, who frequently use gravel, stones, and greens to great effect.
