Recommends of books from band lime or 11

Postby SputnikInSpace » Wed Jul 15, 2015 11:47 pm

Hello all

I am looking for ideas of books from/ or close to the band 11 or Lime for my son to read over holidays.

Any recommendations on the books that your child have enjoyed?

I’ve spent the last few days banding new book stock at a local primary school. It’s not an exact science but I can tell you some popular books at that level are:

The simpler Roald Dahl titles – Magic Finger, The Enormous Crocodile, Esio Trot, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits;
Horrid Henry; Dirty Bertie; Mr Gum; (plenty of books in these series);
The How to Train Your Dragon series;
Also, look out for titles by Dick King-Smith and some of the simpler Michael Morpurgo’s, as well as the Seriously Silly Stories series by Laurence Anholt.

I hope this is a useful starting point. These are roughly National Curriculum Level 3 (soon to change, but good to use as a guide) – your local children’s librarian should be able to show you further titles at about the right level.

Happy reading!

Sorry I have no idea what Band lime means but ... having read the great list from Test Club Tutors, you could also try the Percy Jackson series. My children are loving them ! And now have this amazing knowledge of greek gods.

For something easier the Tom Gates series have been also a huge hit in my house !

You've received some excellent suggestions already.
I must admit I am not 100% about the meaning of band 11, but I think it means books for 7-8 y old?
Also popular with our 7.5 y old son: Diary of a Wimpy Kid series (his absolute favourite and a good follow on from Tom Gates); Beast Quest; Astrosaurs (although now outgrown slightly). Not highbrow literature, but if it gets him into the joy of reading, I'm all for it!

What about Flat Stanley, the Sally Gardner series The Smallest ……. in the World, the Spy Dog series and the Charlie Small series?

Thank you very much to everyone who replied. This is a really good list. Hope my son finds his favourite in one of these!
