Stop Funding Hate

Postby BFW » Sun Nov 06, 2016 10:32 am

If like me you are disgusted by the Daily Mails front page a few days ago condemning the 3 judges decision, please consider liking this FB page and signing this petition and stop buying this piece of rag that calls itself a newspaper. Full of hatred and biased extreme right wing views.

Petition on 38 degrees:

Yes, we must save the millions of people being marched at gunpoint into newsagents to buy this paper.

Oh....hang on....they're not. They have free will. They can choose to buy the paper, they can choose to not buy it.

The petition (which thankfully is failing) is meaningless.

Whilst everyone is clearly free to buy this rag, I am also free to express my disappointment for the total disrespect of our legal framework in this right wing, biased, divisive publication.

As you are free Jen to disagree with me.

Jen66 ,it is not about stopping people buying this kind of (toilet )paper but it is about stopping inciting hatred and lies.

'stop buying this piece of rag' sentence in the original post suggests it IS about that.

Anyhow. It's one of the best selling newspapers in the country with one of the most viewed websites in the world...so don't hold your breath

The fact that so many English people buy the Daily Mail is a reflection of the poor quality of the English state education system.

How so? How do you see the correlation? I loathe the DM but if people want to buy it then so be it.

Even though I do not agree with this newspaper's view and the way it is consistently publishing sensational headlines, is it right to now blame our educational system because someone has a different view?. We live in a democracy and thus entitled to have freedom of speech, if you do not agree with someone view then you blame their education/intelligence??.

The premise of Stop Funding Hate is to pressure companies to end their associations with papers such as the Mail and Express. Advertisers include Waitrose, Coop and PC World. People can buy the papers if they want but advertising in them given the stories they print is another matter.

I don't usually post on this website, but I am incensed to be told that people's views, as expressed through a petition, are 'meaningless'. So, just for the record, I have signed both petitions. Our voices will be heard.

Thank you Punctured Bicycle for putting this in much better words than mine !

My post was probably overly passionate and by saying "stop buying this rag" moved away from the main premise of the Stop Funding Hate campaign. But I was brought up believing in the importance of a system of balances and to respect the judiciary. And I believe that this rag is just encouraging mob rule and hatred.

The Mail is very good at what it does & though I find much of its content fairly offensive I can’t say it bothers me all that much. If nothing else their mobile app & celeb gossip stories are both very good.

But they definitely overstepped the mark with that headline, I hope they get into trouble for it [nothing too serious of course] & think they probably will.

The petition is meaningless. Advertisers are not going to stop placing ads because a bunch of people (who don't buy the paper in the first place) don't like it.

These petitions do the rounds every few months or so. There was one targeting The Sun's advertisers a few months back.

Julian,

I’m afraid this has EVERYTHING to do with education. The DM and other newspapers tell lies about foreign people and refugees day in day out. They are also deeply sexist.

When the TV interviewed people in Wales about the referendum they were saying that foreigners are taking more than they put in. The government statistics say foreign workers contribute a lot more in NI contributions and income tax than they take out. But they do not believe them. They believe the DM. I suspect the Office for National Statistics know more than the DM but of course, the statisticians are experts and we don’t like those.

Education is vital to develop a critical mind. To question EVERYTHING you read. Many people that read nothing, read the DM. It is all they read. And they believe everything it says. Why people, including educated people, buy this newspaper? Because we love a bit of gossip, even if it is not true. We love to blame others for what happens to us, even if they are not to blame. But that is human nature. I just think we should work at it.

In order to make an informed vote at the referendum you needed not only a critical mind but, quite frankly, a degree in economics with a phd in international trade agreements. It is THAT complex. The referendum should never have happened. The decision was taken 40 years ago and guess what? It is not the same joining something that leaving. When you leave you take away a lot of acquired rights, specially those of young people. This was two irresponsible Etonians (so much for elite education) bluffing for a laugh. Both of them lost.

It is all over the intelligent press how these days we seem to get away with lies in a way that before was not allowed. From the Leave campaign breaking all their promises THE VERY NEXT DAY, to Putin taking the **** in every Syria peace talks, to Trump (the list is too long with this one). Politicians AND THE PRESS seem to take no responsibility whatsoever for the lies they tell.

In a country where we care so much about the English language, I think we should care a bit less how we write and a bit more if what we write is true. We are quick at judging other countries for being corrupt but I am afraid lying is another way of corrupting people.
