Laundry room - Where do you dry you clothes? Post Reply

I hate nothing more than the sight of drying clothes in the middle of my living room, or kitchen or bedroom. So I am thinking of creating a laundry room where I could let everything dry on a rack there, and maybe have the ironing board etc.

Do anyone have a similar room? Where did you set it up in your Victorian conversion? 2nd Floor? Ground?

We have a dryer under the stairs. It was the second thing purchased when we moved in. (First was king sized bed).

Both purchases reduce stress greatly. I highly recommend.

Ah! I also went for the King-sized bed! Life is too short...

The point is that I don't like using a dryer and I am very old school and mostly use a drying rack..

If anyone still uses such thing where do you put this eyesore?

Have you considered a laundry maid (as in an overhead drying rack, not someone you employ!)? I've seen them installed from the ceiling as you go up the stairs to the second floor very successfully out of the way.

OK I'll start using the dryer more then. If everybody swears by it surely it's is THE solution!

I still have wool, silk and other delicates that I need to hang though as I stopped paying for dry clean when washing machine can actually handle them very well with an appropriate washing liquid. So I'll go for the ceiling rack above a less used bathroom or I'll set up a small room just for that.

Tumble Dryers are the devils invention (according to my husband ) after a long debate with his eco warrior credentials winning hands down but our wet dog clothes smell permeating the laundry room on drying racks.
He bought us Meaco 12L low energy Dehumidifier for laundry use £150. IT IS AMAZING!!! we hang clothes in our downstairs bathroom / laundry room and in 3hrs it's all beautifully dry. Without the need for an appliance that is one of the most energy guzzling giants of the household.
I never thought I'd manage to dry a family of 4's washing 3times a week so easily! I'm converted! And have reduced our carbon footprint

The larger one fits several loads on and dries everything overnight. It's one thing I'd replace immediately if it ever broke!

Buy a dehumidifier - much the best and put it in the room with the laundry maid - best green solution and doenst wear your clothes out as a tumble drier does

We have a laundry room, it's off the kitchen & backs onto the garden. In there we have washing machine, tumble dryer, sink ironing board & a couple of drying racks on the floor as well as wall mounted one for duvet covers, sheets etc.

I use the tumble dryer to get most things almost dry & then hang up, ahead of being ironed or put away. I keep the radiator turned right up so things dry really quickly. In the Summer months, I use the drying racks outside & a rotary clothes line for duvets & sheets that can be put away as soon as things are dry.

I also have a laundry basket in there for napkins, tea towels etc, I find it works really well having everything in one place & it means that the rest of the house is free of laundry.

I agree on the suggestion of the Lakeland heated clothes airer. We have a large and small one and they are fab. We put one on an upstairs landing overnight and the clothes are dry in the morning. Another one goes in the playroom overnight if we need it. All clothes can put put into a basket for ironing/folding the following morning. The clothes airer is cleaper to run than a tumble dryer and also less harmful for clothes. I can hang most clothing on it whereas there are many things I would avoid putting in a tumble dryer.

I was just having this conversation with a friend this morning, wondering how everyone else manages! I've got 2 kids under 3 and am sick of having laundry permanently cluttering up my kitchen. Have been anti-driers, mainly as we dont have one but also out of some sense of environmentalism but am reaching the end of my tether.

I don't like using the tumble dryer either except for towels, though been driven to it recently We have our wet clothes hanging in a spare room but they do take a long time to dry. That lakeland heated airer looks brilliant! Thanks

Gosh that dryer from Lakeland does look good (I feel quite sad that I am actually quite excited about this......)

Can you fold and put it in a cupboard after use?

They do fold so it depends how big your cupboard is - look at the dimensions. The height stays the same when folded. They could possibly go under a bed if you don't have a cupboard big enough.
