Re: How many godparents is usual?

If you're not religious, why are you considering a christening and the appointment of godparents?

Notwithstanding the above, 3 for each child is fairly traditional, the gender bias of each godparent being towards the sex of the child in the ratio 2:1.

Re: Dilemma re selling/letting flat

Firstly, find out if either buyer wants to/would be prepared to buy as a rental investment - if so, you have already found them a tenant and you must stipulate that they accept your tenant as theirs and take on the rental agreement. In that way, everyone wins.  But what ever happens, if you accept e...

Re: Not invited to a girls weekend.

As someone who has experienced similar 'NFI' moments in the past, I feel that Tomorrow Tomorrow's reply is close to the mark.  But I rather disagree with another reply which urges you to contact the organiser directly.....this is exerting too much social pressure on someone who may feel uncomfortabl...

Re: Permanently grumpy husband

As an occasionally stressed husband, I can relate to much of this and to many of the helpful posts in reply - especially the wise words of StressedHusb.  There are so many things at play, in theory: his work environment; the home environment; how he feels in this moment, at his stage in life. I have...

Re: Daughter's best friend and family quite religious and she is asking why we don't pray

I would feel the same way if I thought the other family were trying to enforce their religious beliefs on your (very young) daughter. But if they aren't, then you should attempt to be open minded about it. I don't feel that you should prevent your daughter mixing with people who have different views...

Re: Ground vibration

I used to hear a deep humming noise which sounded electrical, I'm surprised to learn it could be just from the passage of fluid through a sewer system. This was many years ago; when I asked around, it was suggested that it might have something to do with ventilation tunnels being built in connection...

Re: Colette closing on Northcote Road

It's a very interesting discussion. So many lovely High street shops in London are ruined by high rents. What a shame to hear about the music shop and people spending on Amazon instead. Don't get me started on those American Candy shops in Central London! It all needs addressing. This is why the in...

Re: Duke of Norfolk accused of using phone while driving BMW in Battersea

Dimelda - quite possibly so. Watch this space for "Schoolboy distant descendant of Benjamin Disraeli caught taking an extra chocolate biscuit from his mother's newly fitted Smallbone kitchen".....

Re: Duke of Norfolk accused of using phone while driving BMW in Battersea

Seriously?!? Does anyone care? Or is this "news" simply because the D of N is the closest that Battersea gets to royalty (notwithstanding the little royals attending Thomas's). What with the nation's obsession with a certain party in Downing Street, it's hard not to wonder if the UK is sin...

Re: Sister inherited life changing amount of money but angry my parents want to give me more of their inheritance

The only person who looks blameless in this story is the godmother.  Your sister doesn't really have any right to be outraged by your parents decision, especially after inheriting so much money unexpectedly. Moreover, it is your parents' legitimate right to decide, as what they do with their bequest...

Re: How do I stop my wife having 'just a couple' of my chips, crisps, chocolates etc.

My wife does this occasionally, not just in restaurants. But we have an easy policy of sharing when we go out, so picking at each other's food is part of our marriage contract! Where it gets me is in my private stash (of chocolate, for example) - often thinly concealed in my backpack or briefcase et...

Re: Husband wants to cut back on our lifestyle and won't let me ask my parents for help

Wow. At first reading, it's hard not to judge this post harshly. The oft used phrase 'self-entitled' comes to mind. I really hope that my children don't grow up thinking like this, when they're older and have reached the stage where they can (and should) operate as self contained family units, with ...

Re: should I go to an old friend's flashy wedding?

My amateur observations on friendships/ageing/life would suggest that if your original friendship with this person was facilitated by circumstances and possibly injured by her career trajectory, financial abundance and choice of partner, maybe you should leave it. But if you built your friendship on...

Re: Teen behaviour. Help.

This doesn't directly address the issues you describe, but the course of action taken by an acquaintance of mine was too good not to share - and may possibly help in some way. His teenage daughter was regularly slamming shut her bedroom door in a temper and also being very rude to his wife. One day ...

Re: Is a new iphone too much for a 10 year old for Xmas?

No you're not being mean at all - unless you've already given him the impression that he might have his wish granted. Our eldest child didn't get a 'phone until he was 13 and it was a cast off from an older relative. Our youngest was given a partially damaged cast off by a friend (unexpectedly and w...
