Don’t forget copies of passports, EHIC cards, emergency numbers and more.
1. Insurance. It’s essential. Go for a multi-trip family policy and make sure it covers your children’s specific ages and any special needs. Don’t forget to declare any special needs too. Make sure you’re EHIC cards are up-to-date and you have photocopies. If you want to be super-techie use Dropbox to store copies of all of your documents (insurance, passports, EHIC, emergency numbers) as they can be retrieved from an app. installed on anyone’s phone (with the right permissions).
2. Make a list of emergency numbers and keep a couple of copies with you in different luggage sets. Leave one in your holiday accommodation whilst you’re out sightseeing!
3. Don’t assume every property will be right for children and don’t assume it’ll have been childproofed. AirBnB properties are NOT inspected and safety standards rely on the landlord following local laws. Be super-careful about steps, pools and glass doors. Don’t assume that the electric fittings or emergency procedures meet
anything other than local standards. For example, there is no global standard for the height of a balcony rail. Local taxi or car hire firms might not provide booster seats/seat belts.
4. Do not just accept an operator’s endorsement of a children’s club check it out yourself. Go with your gut and listen to your children if they say they don’t like the club.
Happy travelling!
